Good work if you can get it

Who says you can't make any real money working for the government? The head of the US Education Department's Federal Student Aid office, one Theresa Shaw, managed to squeeze a quarter million bucks in bonuses out of the department over the past four years. These came at a time when the department's oversight of the lucrative student loan industry (I still don't understand why there has to be an industry) has been seriously criticised.

What ever happened to public service; to the idea that you made a bit less money working for the state in return for the satisfaction of doing something for the country? Maybe it never existed. I can be naïve at times.
