Sadly the spectre of foot and mouth disease has returned to Britain with the virus having been discovered at a farm in Surrey. Hopefully the government is taking the steps necessary to keep it from getting out of hand. They seem rather more organised then at the last outbreak in 2001. I suppose time will tell.
However I did spot a curious quote from Debby Reynolds, the chief veterinary officer, in the Guardian's coverage:

"All cattle on this farm will be culled. They will be culled humanely, then they will be disposed of by incineration...They won't be burned."
I am sure that Ms. Reynolds is an intelligent and well educated woman but I wonder if the curriculum for becoming a veterinary doctor pays enough attention to basic English. I am curious to discover how the dead cattle will be incinerated without being burned!
