Over a cup of tea this morning I recalled something that historian Richard Hofstadter said. He said, and I paraphrase, that basic of American politics were "anti-intellectual" and "paranoid". (I have to look up the quote.)
If that is case in the Bush administration we have reached the pinnacle of American politics and it is all downhill from here.
