Victory for unfettered markets?

Lowered prices for consumers.

Extraordinary profits for distributors.

Is this a victory for the unfettered markets?

Let's face it, if you ignore the minor inconvenience of jail time, the drugs market is totally untouched by government interference; no red tape, no unnecessary regulation, no VAT. The prices of cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis are at all time lows.

  • Cannabis resin at £45 per ounce - down 4.5% in the last two years (down 65% since 1994!)
  • Cocaine at £44 per gram - down 32% in the last six years
  • Ecstasy at £3 a pill - down 67% in the last six years

Yet profits remain extraordinarily high.

Adam Smith would be proud.
