Caveat observator

Faux News or Fake News - what's the difference?

There is no difference according to the Radio-Television News Directors Association. The association has complained to the FCC about an investigation into so-called "video news releases" or VNRs which were broadcast without disclosure. The association contends that the FCC's investigation violates their first amendment rights.

So what they want is the unfettered right to broadcast, as news, stories prepared by others without disclosing to the public the source of the "story". These outside producers often, or even perhaps generally, have a vested interest in emphasising one aspect of a story over others or to present public relations as news to the consumer. Curiously many of the offending stations seem to be Faux affiliates.

So unless someone watching the news is a cynical as me they will conceivably end up believing something to be news when in fact it is nothing but self-serving spin. (Well if you watch Faux News I reckon you are getting what you deserve!)
