Rove's kin

Karl Rove must have English blood. Major Desmond Morton, a WWI veteran and Churchill's fixer must surely be related to him.

A newly available official history puts him at the centre of the so-called Zinoviev letter scandal. In the run up to the 1924 general election Morton got his hands on a letter purporting to be from Zinoviev (then the president of Comitern and later to be executed by Stalin) that supposedly called on Britain's Communists to support the Labour Party. He made sure it got in the hands of the Daily Mail, then as now a right wing rag. The Mail published it under the lurid banner "Civil war plot by Socialists' masters: Moscow orders to our Reds; great plot disclosed".

Morton may or may not have believed initially that the letter was genuine but was certainly guilty of suppressing evidence that it was a forgery.

The Labour government was swept from power at the election.

La plus ça change....
