The state of California has seen a handful of bills in the legislature over the past decade related to legalising assisted suicide for the terminally. Some of opposition to these failed attempts has come from disabled groups. Their reasons might surprise you; they surprised me. They are afraid that HMOs and other insurance providers would use the legalisation as an excuse to withhold expensive treatments in the hopes that the insured would kill themselves thereby generating considerable savings.
I thought I was cynical. I really did. But having thought about it I can see their point. If you make the process of getting these treatments difficult enough for a patient in considerable pain or with a poor quality of life death might seem a viable option.
