In service of someone else's country

The US armed forces have been having rather a hard time lately and it is clear that there are lots of problems but at least they haven't this shameful colonial legacy to deal with. An immigration tribunal is to decide whether 2,000 veterans of the service known as the Gurkas, composed entirely of Nepalese soldiers, should be allowed to live in the UK. Prior to a rules change about a decade ago these men were refused the right to remain in Britain after the end of their service because "their links with [the] country were not strong enough". Now had they actually forged stronger links by dying in the service of the Empire they might have had a better case.
