Yesterday marked the 4000th day in detention for Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Where does freedom and democracy for the Burmese people fall on the "freedom agenda"? Not very high it seems. It appears she's been assigned to Laura probably because George thinks Burma has something to do with shaving. Either that or because they haven't got enough oil.
Yesterday in Rangoon the government's Information Minister, Brigadier General Kyaw Hsan, admitted that the National League for Democracy, the party headed by Suu Kyi, gathered the most votes in the 1990 election but that the voters were obviously deluded. He said that NLD voters had not scrutinised "its politics or capabilities and the background history of its candidates". If that is a valid set of criteria (and I'm not suggesting that is is) shouldn't the US military have seized power in November 2000? Had they done so I'm fairly sure we wouldn't be in Iraq!
