Dear Senator McCain,
I am a registered American voter living abroad. I have suffered, on and off over the course of my life, with clinical depression. I am therefore appalled and offended by your "joking" remarks in Iowa yesterday that you would "commit suicide" if your party did not win in the November elections.
Mental illness is no laughing matter. Perhaps 25% of adult Americans have experienced mental illness personally and even more within their families. I would have thought that you were too experienced a politician to offend such a large segment of the potential electorate. It would appear that you are not.
I fully expect that all members of the mental health community; sufferers, doctors and carers as well as charitable organisations share my anger and disgust.
