Albert Einstein famouly objected to the theory of quantum mechanics (for which he was significantly responsible!) by saying "God does not play dice with the universe". One of the aspects of the theory to which he objected most strenuously is what is known as "spooky action at a distance". This property, also known as quantum entanglement, effectively allows the transfer of information instantly (i.e. faster than the speed of light). If an experimenter acts on one of a pair of quantumly entangled particles the effect is "understood" by the other of the pair simultaneously irrespective of the location of either particle.
Now Danish scientists have moved a step closer to practical applications of this effect by teleporting information from light to matter.
I confess that I do not really understand what this all means but find it fascinating nonetheless.
