I find this frightening, strange and rather disturbing behaviour in a cabinet minister (or indeed in anyone). No wonder he's been sacked twice (although never for this).
David Blunkett was Home Minister when Lincoln gaol was taken over by rioters four years ago. Today the papers cite reports that Martin Narey, former director general of the prison service, has indicated that Blunkett told him to call in the army and "machine gun" the prisoners. He was reported to be hysterical at the time, possibly due to girl friend trouble.
In related news the Home Office is accused of delaying a report into diet that could reduce prison violence by up to 40%. There is no available information as to what David Blunkett may have had for lunch on 23 October 2006.
