NOT the same as the old boss

So the number of candidates for UN secretary general is down to one (unless I throw my hat into the ring at the 11th hour). Ban Ki-Moon, the South Korean foreign minister appears likely to succeed Kofi Annan shortly.

For all his faults Annan was intelligent, urbane, committed and charismatic (no wonder Bush doen't like him!).

Mr. Ban is said to be "faceless", weak, to lack communications skills and to be more of an administrator than a strategist. At best he is a technocrat. He is also rumoured to be a member of the Unification Church (aka the Moonies).

UN employees are said to be despondent.

John Bolton is said to be estatic.
