Perhaps better known for being on the periphery of controversy than for his own athletic achievements, Australian sprinter Peter Norman has died at the age of 64. Norman was the silver medallist in the 200 metres at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. The 200 metre contest that year is perhaps better remembered for the black power salute of John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the medal ceremony. Norman was supportive of the gold and bronze medal winners when he found out about their plans and it was Norman who suggested the two share a pair of gloves for the protest after Carlos forgot to bring his. He also wore the same badge as the two Americans, who were subsequently banned from the games.
A good man gone.
