"We don't do a lot of hearts and minds out here"

So said Colonel Stephen Davis about a year ago. It would appear he's right.

A report (PDF) published in The Lancet puts the number of Iraqi dead, since the American / British invasion of 2003, at 655,000. Of these 600,000 had died violently. While their estimate is dramatically higher than those of other organisations they are explicit in defining their methodologies and risk factors.

Bush's response: "I don't find the report credible".

Other important findings:
  • The number of deaths continued to rise year on year since 2003
  • Coalition forces are responsible for just under a third of these deaths
