When ambition trumps conscience

In an extract, published today, from David Blunkett's new book we learn that Gordon Brown initially opposed the Iraq invasion and only caved in at the last minute once he realised that Tony Blair would sack him.

Would history have been different had he shown some spine? Perhaps. There was considerable back bench opposition already and it is possible that Brown could have swung considerable support in that direction. Could it been enough to bring Blair down as leader? Now we will never know and it's a shame.

This has decided for me. I hope Brown never gets to be PM. Based on these revelations that is surely the fate he deserves.
