Facing up to horror

Seven British soldiers are currently being tried in Wiltshire for abusing Iraqi detainees. One of the seven has already pleaded guilty.

The charges are horrific and I shan't detail them here. If you are interested I'm sure that you can pop over to one of the tabloids such as The Sun or The Daily Mail for the graphic details.

All that I wish to point out here is that the soldiers have been accused of, and in one case confessed to, war crimes. I believe that, to the rest of the world at least, it is important when these atrocities occur that we admit them for what they are - war crimes. This is the first prosecution under the International Criminal Court Act. I hope it is the last. This addresses, if only in a small way, the appearance of "victor's justice".
