Render unto Rupert

Coming soon to a screen near you - Faux Faith.

First it was Faux News now it appears that Rupert Murdoch is to launch an outreach programme to Christians with the announcement that "FoxFaith*, part of the home entertainment division of Rupert Murdoch's movie studio, plans to produce as many as a dozen new films a year".

This will undoubtedly be greeting with hosannas by the evangelical right who will be blissfully unaware (or at least choose to ignore) that this is nothing more than a ploy to tap into a market estimated to be in excess of 4 billion USD annually.

Whilst pumping out these dozen films a year for the Christian market Fox will also be spitting out dozens of vehicles that FauxFaith's target customers will find reprehensible, boycott and protest.

Other quasi-independent Fox enterprises that have been mooted to target niche audiences include:

  • FauxGay - obviously this will target those with ""alternative lifestyles". The first film could be a remake of My Beautiful Launderette (to be co produced with FauxAsian).
  • (NotSoFaux)Racist - first vehicle would be a remake of Birth of a Nation. Ideally starring Mel Gibson with Senator George Allen as a technical consultant (he may soon need the work).
  • FauxHebrew - since FauxFaith seems to want to concentrate on the Christian community this sister organisation would target the Jewish community. Possible productions could include a biopic of Henry Kissinger, a new version of Yentl featuring Pam of Atlas Shrugs (hopefully without gratuitous nudity) or remakes of the entire Woody Allen back catalogue.
FauxGreen and FauxLiberal were suggested (probably by an intern) but everyone just laughed and laughed.

*Note - despite the new division being called FoxFaith there isn't any mention of plans for Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Daoist or (GASP!!!) Muslim films. Perhaps FoxJesus might have been a better name (or is that idolatry?).
